Named after the proprietors’ respective fathers – Jack Arnoff and “Brooks” Ghilarducci – Jack Brooks Vineyard is likely the smallest commercial-producing winery in the Calistoga Winegrowers Association.
Located on the valley floor within walking distance of the famed Chateau Montelena, Larry and Eileen Arnoff own a small Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard that produces about 100 cases a year. The couple, born and raised in Chicago, spent countless vacations in Wine Country, which led to a desire to own a home and property in the area, which led to buying a property in 1999 and planting a vineyard in 2000.
Their small-production wines, which are a true expression of their terroir, sell out fast.
The Jack Brooks 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon had a clear, deep red color with a fragrant perfume of cherries and herbs.
On the palate there was baked apple with a caramel drizzle, more cherry, a hint of anise, blood orange, mocha, soft rose petals and a lingering mixed herb essence. It is elegant and graceful.
Food pairings might include pork chops with a cherry jam reduction and sweet potato puree.
The current offering for sale from the winery is the 2014 Jack Brooks Cabernet Sauvignon, priced at $60. Their wine is found at Solbar at Solage and Evangeline, both in Calistoga, Rustic Canyon (Santa Monica) and Houston’s in Manhattan Beach. Jack Brooks Vineyard Cabernet can also be purchased at the Calistoga Wine Stop at the Depot, which will ship to other states.
