Terroir (tare-WAH) is one of the most commonly used and least understood words in the vocabulary of wine mostly because it is derived from the French "terre" meaning earth or land, but with no precise translation to English, according to Allen Balik.

Guests got a first look at the new JCB St. Helena tasting room after the Premiere Napa Valley live auction on Sunday, Feb. 25. Located at 1320 Main St., the new space features JCB wines and an extensive collection of Renaissance-style art commissioned by Jean-Charles Boisset.

Premiere Napa Valley, the annual fundraiser for the Napa Valley Vintners, brought in $3 million during the multi-day event that culminated with a Saturday auction at the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone.
