Wine Finds: Zinfandel for Father’s Day celebrations

  • Updated

If you’re planning to celebrate Father’s Day with a cookout featuring such favorites as steak, burgers and ribs, then consider adding a robust red zinfandel to your shopping list. Although there are different styles of zinfandel, they are frequently big and fruity, making them a perfect pair with just about any meat that comes off the grill. And while most zinfandel wines come from California, the grape is grown in other areas, even Oregon.

Troon Vineyard 2018 Zinfandel, Applegate Valley, Oregon

Bought • Parker’s Table, 7118 Oakland Avenue in May for $14.99

Description • It’s unusual to find an Oregon zinfandel in our market, as well as any type of wine from the state’s Applegate Valley appellation, which is just north of the California border. Another interesting thing about this red is that it has an alcohol level of 13.2%, which is relatively low for a zinfandel. A blend of mostly zinfandel with a touch of petite sirah, this is a very dry red that’s been aged in mature French oak barrels. It’s a medium-bodied, intense wine that tastes of blackberries and other dark fruit.

Peirano Estate Vineyards 2018 The Heritage Collection Old Vine Zinfandel, Lodi, California

Bought • Parker’s Table, 7118 Oakland Avenue in May for $14.99

Description • Put this red on your radar if you’re a fan of big, fruity zinfandels, particularly if they’re oaked. It’s made from zinfandel vines that are more than 100 years old and have been tended by six generations of the Peirano family. Aged in American and French oak, this is a full-bodied, jammy zinfandel with firm tannins that’s bursting with juicy red berry fruit, black pepper spice and hints of earth, smoke and sweet tobacco. It’s a well-balanced red that easily hides its high alcohol level of 14.8%.
